Pull the upper lid down over the lens (ask the patient to continue to look down and close their eyes). HOLD the upper lid closed because if one releases the upper lid the lens will probably just slide out from under the upper lid. While holding the upper lid in place, with the index finger of the other hand, pull the lower lid out from under the lens. If necessary have the patient look up, keeping the upper lid in place all the time. Once the lower lid is on top of the lens, the lids can be released. Check to be sure the lower lid is on top of the lens.
